How to Check Whether a China Supplier Is Legitimate
Use this checklist to confirm a supplier is legally registered, operationally active, and consistent across documents, contacts, and registry data.
π€ Why legitimacy checks matter
A supplier can look credible online and still be cancelled, misrepresented, or operating outside its stated role. A legitimacy check helps you decide whether the company is suitable to onboard, not just whether it exists.
π Step 1: Search the Company by Name or USCC
Enter the supplier's name or Unified Social Credit Code on the ChinVerify Checker. Use the record returned as the baseline for everything else you review. If the supplier is legitimate, you should see official registry data including:
- Official registration number
- Registered capital level
- Current operating status
If you see 'Cancelled' or 'Revoked', the supplier is not legally active and should not move into approval.
π Step 2: Check Business Scope and Type
Test whether the company's claimed role matches the registry. A real factory should show manufacturing or processing language. If the record only lists trading or consulting, classify the supplier accordingly instead of assuming it owns the plant.
βοΈ Step 3: Verify Their Legal Representative and Ownership
A real company name with the wrong contact chain is still a fraud risk. Match the legal representative, ownership details where available, and the people sending contracts or payment instructions before contract execution.
π§ Step 4: Cross-check Contact Info and Domain
Compare the website domain, email addresses, invoice issuer, and registered entity. Free mailboxes, mismatched domains, or different company names across documents are early warnings that the supplier story may not hold up.
β Step 5: Confirm Status = 'Continuous'
Only companies marked 'Continuous' or 'In Operation' on ChinVerify are legally valid. Avoid suppliers listed as 'Revoked,' 'Cancelled,' or 'Abnormal Operation.'
