How to Verify a Chinese Exporter Before Shipment or Payment
Use this exporter-check workflow to confirm the company is real, active, and appropriately scoped before shipment or payment release.
🚢 Why exporter checks are different
In export transactions, you are exposed on both funds and cargo. A company may be real but still not be the right entity to ship, invoice, or receive payment. Exporter checks reduce that gap before goods move.
🔍 Step 1: Check the Exporter's Registration Details
Search the exact entity that will invoice, ship, or receive payment in the ChinVerify Checker. Do not assume the sales company, factory, and exporter are the same. Review:
- Whether the entity is registered as trading or import/export business
- Registration authority and export-related business scope
- USCC used across invoices, contracts, and customs-facing documents
🧾 Step 2: Confirm Export Qualifications
Confirm that the registered scope explicitly includes import/export of goods or technology. If the scope does not support export activity, the supplier may need another legal entity to ship, which should be reviewed before PO or payment approval.
⚖️ Step 3: Check Legal Representative and Company Status
Match the legal representative and company name against contract signatures, customs-facing documents, and beneficiary bank details. If the exporter record and the payment recipient differ, stop and ask which entity is actually performing the transaction.
🌍 Step 4: Cross-Verify with Customs Data
Where trade or customs data is available, use it to confirm the exporter has real operating history rather than only a paper registration. Registry data shows the company exists; activity data helps show whether it actually exports.
